One mile north of DOVER is the MISSOURI RIVER; the MIGHTY MISSOURI also nicknamed the "Big Muddy". Every major trail for the opening of the American West had their starting points on the Missouri River. The Missouri River in its original natural meandering state was the longest river in North America. "Rivers Journey" is in honor of the "Wide Missouri" for it was this river more than anything else that allowed those adventurers to journey westward and discover a new way of life.

The Bluffs of Dover overlook the mighty Missouri River. The bluffs provided a panoramic view of the wilderness that stretched as far as the eye could see. The Siouan Indian tribes used these bluffs to observe the first Europeans, Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette, who were looking to discover the Vermillion or California Sea.
